The Vision - Movie City USA
The Past...
Nashville. Known worldwide as Music City USA. A designation rooted in cultural tradition, one carried with honor by all who live and work here.
How did Nashville earn the title?
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, New York City's Tin Pan Alley dominated the commercialization of songs but drew from Nashville's reservoir of talented songwriters to meet its demands. Then the 1940’s witnessed the incubation of an entirely new industry when publishing companies, recording studios and record labels began to spring up on what would become the now famous Music Row. Nourished by a diverse, local network of entertainment businesses combined with the exploitation of local Gospel and Country music, Nashville quickly erupted into an essential entertainment industry pillar.
The Present...
Over the last decade, the music business has undergone more core-level changes than the previous one hundred years combined. From digitalization and online access to the surge in independent labels and artists—just to name a few—these changes have affected the major music business centers in America. The music industry at-large has seen a third of its $14.6 billion retail market evaporate since 2000. Locally, a 10-year comparison of Nashville-based record labels between 1998 and 2008 reveals 82 labels vaporizing to 28.
Yet the music industry is by no means dying. It is evolving. New opportunities abound. And those who feel passionately about the power of music and film and storytelling of all kinds understand that this evolution demands a meeting of the old and new, a synergy of tradition and imagination. A revolution.
The Future - Our Vision for Revolution
Revolutionary change does not require a clean slate or complete reinvention. With
Nashville's deep roots in music and entertainment, TEAM
821's vision for Browns Creek Media Village involves
the same kind of natural resource harvesting Nashville experienced in the
1940's, but exploiting it through the conduit of filmed and visual entertainment
production.
Filmed entertainment is not new to Nashville or Tennessee in general. A
growing number of independent and big budget films, in addition to television
and video productions, have come to life right here. Studios and production
companies come to Tennessee for its substantial wealth of human resources equipped
with skills, talent and dedication and, of course, for its abundance of beautiful
and diverse landscapes – from cosmopolitan cities, rolling green hills,
idyllic downtown squares and howlin’ honky tonks.
Meanwhile, Hollywood is striving to connect with the 277 million Americans who live outside of New York City and Los Angeles. The demand for quality "Heartland" entertainment is at an all-time high, and the opportunity for Nashville to stake its flag as Movie City USA has never been so timely: Now is the time for Heartland filmed entertainment filmed in the Heartland.
